Rubber O-Rings and Seals

National Plastics and Seals is recognized globally as one of the leading suppliers of O-rings and seals. An O-ring, also known as a packing, or a toric joint, is a mechanical gasket in the shape of a torus; it is a loop of elastomer with a round cross-section, designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface.

Features and Benefits of O-Rings

O-rings are designed to impede the passage of liquids or gases. The O-ring is one of the simplest precision mechanical pieces ever produced and is still one of the most widely used sealing products on the market. These versatile components can be used in static applications or in dynamic applications in which there is relative motion between the parts and the O-ring, such as in rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinder pistons.

O-rings are one of the most common types of seals used in machine design because they are inexpensive, easy to make, and highly reliable. Plus, they have simple mounting requirements. O-rings can seal tens of megapascals of pressure — in other words, thousands of psi. Other advantages include ease of service (no smearing or retightening) and, since there’s no critical torque on tightening, they’re unlikely to cause structural damage. O-rings require very little room, they’re very lightweight, and they can typically be reused. When they fail, it’s easily identifiable.

No matter the specific O-ring or seal requirement, National Plastics and Seals has an ideal solution. Our products are available in various durometers and materials, including ethylene propylene, nitrile, silicone, neoprene, fluorocarbon, Teflon, Viton, and hydrogenated nitrile, and can be PTFE-coated. Plus, many other types of stock and custom O-rings and plastic seals are available upon request.

Rubber O-rings and plastic seals can be used across many diverse industries and applications, including aerospace, trucking, restaurants, retail stores, hospitals, machining, oil and gas, electronics, food and beverage, and wastewater treatment. More specifically, O-rings are often used in hydraulic pumps and fittings, automobiles, various appliances, air conditioning systems, cylinders and valves, pneumatic tools, firearms, and paint guns.
